Melodic death metal and folk metal often appear next to each other in Finnish playlists, yet they rely on different musical ideas. The overlap comes from melody and heavy guitars; the difference is in where the songs draw their identity from.

Melodic death metal: riffs first

The melodic-death approach usually places guitar harmonies, fast picking and tightly arranged metal riffs at the center. Keyboards can be prominent, but the song still tends to feel driven by the guitar language of death and thrash metal.

Folk metal: texture and storytelling

Folk metal can use similar heaviness, but it often adds traditional melodic shapes, acoustic instruments, dance-like rhythms or a stronger storytelling feel. Even when the instrumentation is fully electric, the melodies may suggest older regional music.

The easiest listening test

Ignore the genre tag and ask what carries the chorus. If the identity is mostly harmonized guitars and extreme-metal riffing, you are probably closer to melodic death metal. If traditional melody, folk rhythm or narrative atmosphere drives the track, the folk-metal label makes more sense.
